City Academy Norwich’s Patron of Reading meets year 7 students
Alexander Gordon Smith our Patron of Reading came to talk to our new Year 7 students about the importance of reading and the inspiration for his own writing last week.
“I really enjoy being Patron of Reading for City Academy Norwich. Reading is the single best education you can have as a writer, and one of the most important things you can do as a person. Reading makes you smart and keeps you sharp, and it gives you an incredible understanding of yourself and the world around you. Books are the foundation on which you can build the life of your dreams, because reading teaches you that anything is possible and that you are awesome. If you read today, then you will own tomorrow.”
He is best known as the author of the Escape From Furnace Series, made up of Lockdown, Solitary, Death Sentence, Fugitives and Execution.
His is also the author of The Fury, and wrote The Inventors - which was runner-up in the national Wow Factor Award - and The Inventors and the City of Stolen Souls, both of which were co-authored by his eleven-year-old brother Jamie.
He is the author of two creative writing handbooks, Inspired Creative Writing and Writing Bestselling Children's Books, a number of screenplays that are currently in development, several non-fiction books and hundreds of short stories and articles.
He uses real life events and experiences as inspiration, as well as real life characters. He enjoys making characters of people he doesn’t like and making bad things happen to them.
He also said he feels inspired every time he reads a book by another author – If it’s a good book, he wants to write something similar; If it’s a bad book, he wants to show he can do better!
Gordon’s talk was inspiring and hilarious and his books flew off the Library shelves afterwards!
