Safer Schools

Course description 

Throughout the year the Academy ensures students learn about extremely important aspects of being safe in today’s society.  These sessions interweave with work undertaken within all subject areas studied and provide a learning experience that is essential in for developing an awareness in all our students.

Key Stage 3 

Years 7, 8 & 9

Throughout years 7, 8 and 9 topic areas covered are relevant to the age of the students and the delivered and content are appropriate for the students concerned.  Many sessions are delivered in smaller groups of around 20-25 students in a classroom setting as this allows students to engage in conversation and to ask questions.  Other methods of delivery include Assemblies and with individual tutor groups.

Year 7

  • Internet safety part 1
  • Halloween and Bonfire Night safety
  • Child Sexual Exploitation
  • Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Internet safety part 2

Year 8

  • Healthy Relationships and teen abuse - 50 minute session
  • Halloween and Bonfire Night Safety
  • Sexting
  • Child Sexual Exploitation
  • Anti-Social Behaiviour

Assessing Progress

Academic progress is not measured in this course however contributions are praised and celebrated.

Homework

There will be not be specific homework tasks assigned for this course but parents and carers are encouraged to discuss with students topics covered when appropriate.

Safeguarding

This course is specifically designed to educate our students and allow them to develop the skills they need to identify risks and stay safe.  Many topic areas covered are also built upon within other subject areas so as to develop in our student’s essential life skills.

Equipment

All students are expected to bring a pen, pencil, ruler and rubber in order to be prepared for learning. 

Career Opportunities supported by Staying Safe Course:

Whilst not directly resulting in a qualification specific to a chosen career, this course equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to continue to remain safe in their lives going forwards.
