This year Sports Day was on Thursday 12th July at the UEA Sportspark. Throughout the day pupils from each House (Griffins, Phoenix and Titans) were competing against each other to gain as many points for their House as possible.
Sports Day had an amazing start in the morning with Year 7 & 8’s. For the Year 7’s this was their first Sports Day at City Academy Norwich at this amazing venue! The weather was perfect and the Year 7 & 8’s kicked it all off with the 1500m race, followed by Javelin, Shot Put, Discus, Long Jump and High Jump.
After this the Year 7’s returned to the Academy for lessons whilst the Year 9 & 10’s competed in their morning events. Many records were broken by participants in all year groups, however the most remarkable was Ben Gray in Year 9 who broke records in all 4 field events that he competed in.
The work ethic and enthusiasm that all those participating showed truly represented just how hard all pupils at our Academy work.
Records broken in the morning events:
Ben Rider – Long Jump – 4.70m (beating 4.26m)
Lauryn Mitchell – Shot Put – 8.44m (beating 6.63m)
Ben Gray – Javelin – 36.88m (beating 27.32m)
Ben Gray – Long Jump – 5.17m (beating 5.10m)
Ben Gray – Triple Jump – 11.03m (beating 10.83m)
Ben Gray – High Jump – 1.70m (beating 1.60m)
Carina Balde – Shot Put – 8.07m (beating 6.48m)
Justas Gurskas – Shot Put – 11.78m (beating 9.38m)
Victoria Corner – Javelin – 12.47m (beating 11.10m)
Jake Roper – Shot Put – 11.96m (beating 11.50m)
In the afternoon all pupils and staff of the Academy walked over to the Sportspark to either compete in more events or support those that were. All pupils in the stands were cheering and supporting their peers and team mates. More records were broken. The most remarkable was the Year 9 girls 4x100m Relay Team who beat the previous record by over 3 seconds!
Everyone worked so hard and the determination of those competing, along with the support of the spectators, created the most amazing atmosphere!
The final event to finish off the day was the Staff Fun Relay, which had everyone in stitches! They had four tasks, which included egg and spoon, 3-legged race, army crawl under a parachute, and finally a racing towards the finish line whilst bouncing a tennis ball up with a racket. The Phoenix staff took this victory to the stands with spectators cheering!
Records broken in the afternoon events:
Wilondja Rajabu – 100m – 12.13sec (beating 12.74sec)
Alicia Sayer, Emily Hawkins, Carina Balde, Favor Ogoba - 4x100m Relay Team – 1:01.42min (beating 1:04.88min)
At the end of the day the results were announced:
- Year 7 Winners – Griffins
- Year 8 Winners – Phoenix
- Year 9 Winners – Griffins
- Year 10 Winners – Phoenix
- Overall Winners – Griffins!!
Everyone was ecstatic! Overall it was an amazing day and on behalf of the pupils at City Academy Norwich I would like to thank all staff involved for working as hard as they did to organise this year’s Sports Day. The sportsmanship, camaraderie and enjoyment of all made it one to remember!
“In the 22 years that I have taught here that is the best Sports Day I’ve seen!” Mr Wobus
